Marshall texas has an arts program that rivals that of many major cities. They offer not only gallery space but also classrooms, an incredible photolab, facilities for sculpting and throwing pots as well as areas for resident artists to work. It was great for us to go to a place that expressed such a dedication to the arts.
We spoke to a high school group as well as visited trinity Elementery where we taught the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders how to paint by touch alone. We also did sightless painting with Marshall's Boy's and Girl's club.
Hurricane Rita was hitting the coast at the time that the reception was scheduled for so it had to be canceled. Marshall is far away from the coast so we were in no danger although it was eerie to be the only ones heading towards the storm while everyone else was heading away. The Bed and Breakfast that we stayed at was filled with evacuees from the storm; Jacqi and I were both impressed with how considerate and thoughtful these people were considering the incredible stress and worry that they were under.
